How Sleep Affects Memory and Learning in Teenagers: An Autoethnographic Study

Introduction
Sleep plays an important role in mental and physical health, especially in teenagers. It is an essential factor in academic success. Lack of sleep leads to lack of memory and the ability to learn or stay focused. Adolescents experience significant changes in their sleep routines. Many do not get the recommended amount of sleep due to academic demands, extracurricular activities, and increased screen time. As a result, sleep deprivation has become increasingly common among teenagers.
Scientific research has shown that sleep is not simply a period of something meant to do good for the body, but an active process during which the brain strengthens itself and stores new information. Memory consolidation—the process by which short-term memories are transformed into long-term memories—occurs primarily during sleep. When teenagers do not get enough quality sleep, this process can be disrupted, potentially leading to difficulties with attention, learning, and memory retention.
This paper explores how sleep affects memory and learning in adolescents by examining the biological mechanisms of sleep, the impact of sleep deprivation on cognitive performance, and the long-term consequences of insufficient sleep on academic achievement. Understanding the relationship between sleep and learning is essential for promoting healthier sleep habits and improving educational outcomes for adolescents. This paper will discuss how sleep may improve focus and overall performance.
Methodology
Researchers often collect and measure the effects of sleep on memory and learning using standardized cognitive tests, including memory recall tasks, working memory assessments, attention and reaction time tests, and academic-style evaluations. These tests allow scientists to compare performance between well-rested and sleep-deprived adolescents.
Scientists have mainly conducted observational studies. Students take surveys to record how much sleep they get each night and how they feel it affects their learning ability. This study aims to fill a gap in research, as it is innately auto-ethnographic, differing from traditional researching methods.
Experimental studies, such as tests, are taken to record academic performance, memory skills, and attention. Tests such as word-list recall, where the student studies a list of words and later attempts to recall and recite them aloud, story recall, where the student reads or is read a short story and later attempts to explain what they remember, and paired associate learning, where students need to remember images or words. Other tests are taken, learning tests-learning new vocabulary, symbols, or learning new rules of a game or task. Lastly, attention tests, reaction time tasks-responding quickly to a signal.
Cognitive and memory tests are the same as discussed in the experimental studies. It helps researchers collect enough data for their final analysis.

Additional Notes and Acknowledging Bias
On Monday, went to bed late as I was coming back home late and had decided to go to school in the morning. Tuesday was a regular day; watched a movie right before bed. Wednesday, I went to bed at a decent time, and slept more than on all the other days. Thursday was not too bad; I was not using any screens before bed. Friday was decent. I went to bed late because of homework that needed to be turned in. Saturday, I had work again the next day, and went to bed late because I didn’t feel like going to bed early. Sunday, I was very tired because I was busy that whole day and couldn’t go to bed till very late, and I had work the next day.
Discussion
This table chart allows me to see the possible patterns that make my academic performance in school poorer. I found that I am more likely to be tired the next day if I use screens for over my limit such as 3 hours, which I had noted on some days. I have also seen that I wake up and go to bed at different times every day. With this data, I now know what I can do to improve not only my lack of sleep but also my overall performance during the day, as I can lower my screen use every day and go to bed earlier if I have to wake up earlier.
